Ochre is a 3-pound (Beetleweight-class) combat robot. It runs an asymmetrical drisk spinner weapon made from two sheets of 1/4" AR500 steel, 4.3" in diameter, with an estimated maximum energy output of 650 joules with a tip speed of 110 m/s (245mph).
It uses a four-wheel drive with 60mm custom cast-urethane wheels and Blitz Pro geared drive motors by Just 'Cuz Robotics.
The chassis is made mostly of UHMW and high-stiffness TPU with four internal carbon fiber rods to increase rigidity. The top and bottom plates are PETG.
Ochre was built for Mech Mayhem 2026, a double-elimination combat robot tournament. The event is run by ASME at UCLA's Combat Robotics club, which I am leading for the 2026-27 academic year.
At Mech Mayhem I had two wins and two losses. One of the losses was due to the weapon's belt pulley melting off due to friction, and the other was due to a few loose wires high-centering the robot after it had been flipped like a turtle stuck on its back.
Pictured to the left are all the robots who competed.
This was my first prototype of the bot. It didn't last long since it was simply too large to make the 3lb weight limit, but it was extremely useful to understand the dimensions, proportion, and assembleability of my final design.
